The presiding deity of the temple is Lord Balasubrahmanya Swami, a form of Lord Murugan or Kartikeya, the Hindu god of war and victory. Lord Balasubrahmanya Swami is often depicted as a youthful deity riding a peacock, wielding a spear or Vel.
Lord Muruga is believed to be the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. According to Hindu mythology, he was born with the purpose of defeating the demon Surapadma and his army of demons.

The Thaipooyam festival is famous for temple music, various types of Kavadis, Shoolam, and Kavadiyattam. The festival is one of the most colorful festivals in the region.

Skanda Sashti commemorates the victory of Lord Murugan over the demon Surapadma and his army of demons. It is celebrated with great fervor and devotion by devotees of Lord Murugan.
