Valiyakoikkal Temple Pathanamthitta

Valiakoikkal Temple is the family temple of the Pandalam Royal Family.

The temple is located at Pandalam in Pathanamthitta District, Kerala. It is situated within the Pandalam Palace premises.

The main deity is Ayyappan. Procession of the Thiruvabharanam (Sacred Ornaments) towards Sabarimala shrine starts from the Valiyakoikkal temple every year before the Makaravilakku festival.Millions of devotees visit this temple every year during the Makaravilakku festive season.

It is believed that Lord Ayyappa instructed the Pandalam king to build a mosque for Vavur at Erumeli. The Vavur deity is as old as the original deity of Ayyappa. Records reveal that the shrine was renovated in 1905. A Muslim priest carries the poojas in Valiyakoikkal Temple. A carved stone slab is worshipped as the idol.

Festivals/Events Celebrated at Valiyakoikkal Temple in Kerala

Thiruvabharana Ghoshayathra is an annual ceremonial procession of the Thiruvabharanam (Sacred Jewellery of Lord Ayappa) towards Sabarimala shrine. The parade starts from the Valiyalukkal temple. It is observed for three days before the Makaravilakku festival.

Dress Code

The basic dress code when visiting a Hindu Temple is shoulders must be covered (easily done with a scarf or a shawl) and trousers or skirts must cover at least knees. It is best to avoid anything too tight, too short and too revealing.
